Match report.
Yorkshire U13A v Nottinghamshire U13, held at Worksop College on Sunday 1st July 2018.
Nottinghamshire 275-5 (Lachlan Doidge 3-26) beat Yorkshire 274-8 (Leo Diffey 95, Alex Cree 55, Lachlan Doidge 35, Matthew Hood 32) by 1 run.
Yorkshire U13s traveled to Worksop College to play Nottinghamshire U13s in what turned out to be their toughest test so far in the Northern Counties Cup.
Winning the toss, on a hot day, Yorkshire chose to field on a wicket that looked under prepared and would offer the bowlers movement. Three hours later, Nottinghamshire finished their allotted 45 overs on 275-6! Notts opener, Martin Kadoo, finished on a huge and impressive 159* off 130 balls. The pick of the Yorkshire bowlers was the captain, Lachlan Doidge, who finished with 3-26. All the other bowlers took some punishment on what turned out to be a flat pitch with a lightning fast outfield. In the heat, the fielding suffered, with several mis-fields and two crucial catches dropped.
After lots of re-hydration, Yorkshire lost opener Sam Spenceley (5) in the second over. Zak Jahangir (17) fell at 33. But, Matthew Hood (32) and Leo Diffey repaired the early damage with a stand of 57. After Hood fell straight after drinks, Leo Diffey and Alex Cree then rebuilt with a stand of 121. Both boys ran well between the wickets and punished the bad deliveries. At 211-3 with 7 overs left, Yorkshire were on track for a memorable victory. However, Cree fell for 55 and Diffey followed soon after for an impressive 95. Doidge smashed a quick fire 35, leaving 14 required off the last 2 overs, with 4 wickets left. The pressure started to show on the lower order. A run out, scampered singles and playing and missing, left Yorkshire needing three off the last ball. The ball was struck well towards the cover boundary, but the batsmen were just short of completing the tying run as Yorkshire were defeated by just one run.
Many thanks to Nottinghamshire for a fantastic game of cricket and Worksop College for hosting the game. Again, plenty to work on in the field but some excellent batting, in what turned out to be a nearly perfect run chase.
