Match report.
Yorkshire U10 Phoenix vs Yorkshire U10 Tykes, held at Beverley Town CC on the Sunday 24th June 2018.
Yorkshire Phoenix 135-5 (Oscar Davey 34, Peter Greenfield 32, Joe Birks 25) beat Yorkshire Tykes 122-8 (Max Chaplin 30) by 13 runs.
The first of three ‘Clash of the White Roses’ was as close as expected between both of our equally matched U10 squads.
Phoenix won the toss and chose to bat in the baking heat of Beverley Town Cricket Club. The Tykes' opening duo of Harry Askey and Tom Bradley kept the batters quiet as runs became hard to come by. They were then equally backed by Max Chaplin as Phoenix were 19 for 0 after 17 overs. Birks (25) and Greenfield (32) upped the tempo after an outstanding catch from Daniel Longley removed Aaron Ratnalingam. After Birks was run out, Oscar Davey (34) took over the mantle and despite losing a couple of wickets at the end, Phoenix finished on 135 for 5.
Tykes were a little more positive up front but lost wickets, before the middle order of Max Chaplin (30), Jack Wilkinson (18) and Tom Bradley (19) took them close. But, the spin of Musa Altaf (1 for 12) and Rohan Patel (2 for 33) left them too much to do at the end as they fell 13 runs short.
Some valuable lessons were learnt by both sides as they now move onto games against Staffordshire (v Tykes) and Lancashire (v Phoenix) before the second Clash of the White Roses.
