- for the 5th consecutive season.
The annual Yorkshire U11s fixture against Lancashire U11s is played for the honour of receiving the Tony Hemingway Memorial Trophy. Tony was a Yorkshire man who went to live and work in Lancashire. He was heavily involved with Rainford CC and with Lancashire age group representative cricket.
Played at Rainford CC, Yorkshire won the toss and invited Lancashire to bat. Lancashire accumulated a total of 157 for 8 wickets in their 40 overs with Evan Williams scoring 60 and Harry Singh 35. The wickets were shared amongst the Yorkshire bowlers with the best performances coming from Rhys Ditta (2-20), Harry Watkinson (2-22) and Ben Walsh (2-34).
Yorkshire took the field to bat confidently. However, after 3 overs they were 3 wickets down for only 5 runs with Josh Boyden having taken all 3 wickets in his first 2 overs and only conceding 1 run! Yorkshire looked in serious trouble. Fortunately, Noah Priestley then joined opener Matthew Weston at the crease and together they pulled Yorkshire back into the game. When Noah was finally out in the 33rd over for a fine 72 they had taken the score to 122-4. Harry Finch (20 not out) and Matthew Weston (52 not out) then took the score to 158-4 in 37.2 overs to win the game.
This was an excellent game of cricket and one which showed the fighting spirit of this year’s Yorkshire Under 11A team. It was also the fifth successive year that the Yorkshire U11A team has won the Tony Hemingway Trophy. The proud team are pictured with the Trophy - congratulations to all involved.
