- August results and match reports.
The Yorkshire U15s Development side had a busy August with results and reports as follows:
1st August v Lancashire, this match was scheduled to be played at Longridge CC in Lancs but unfortunately was cancelled due to rain.
13th August versus Warwickshire at Harrogate CC. Following the loss to Warwickshire in July, the squad were aware of the need to perform well in this fixture especially with the opposition including seventeen and some sixteen year old players. Captain Joe Smith won the toss and elected to bat. Rums were difficult to come with the lose of early wickets, Joe Holderness steadied the innings with 23, Josh Chisholm made 15 and Tom Dowson 14. Loss of middle order wickets meant it was left to the tail to secure a competitive score, which was done capably by James Kelly with 37 and Luke Smith 14 no. The innings total of 149 was thirty below par on a wicket that was offering assistance to spin. In reply Emil Ali made 31 and Ross Warwood 23 but with their dismissals the wickets started to fall. Ed Booth opened with 0-21 from ten and Sam Barraclough continued his fine season with 1-19 from 8.3. It was the spin twins of James Kelly and Joe Smith that changed the game, James taking 2-30 from 10 including the scalp of their prized batter Nick Bland. Joe Smith returned figures of 5-20 from 10 to complete the victory. A great team performance to restrict the opposition and close the game out.
16th August versus Lancashire in 2 x T20 matches.
Match 1, The team lost the toss and Lancashire elected to bat first. A great bowling performance from Ed Booth 4-0-11-1, Sam Barraclough 4-0-14-3, James Kelly 4-0-6-1, Joe Smith 4-0-16-2, Luke Smith 3-0-22-0 and Josh Chisholm 1-0-2-1 restricted Lancashire to 74-9 from their 20 overs. Aaryman Roy top scored for Lancs with 22. In reply Josh Chisholm opened and made 46 no, Tom Dowson made 16+ no with Yorkshire winning by nine wickets in 11 overs.
Match 2, Yorks batted first and totalled 104-6, Jo Holderness 14, Luke Smith 28, Marley Ward 19,Tom Starkey 21 being the contributors. In reply Lancashire scored 77-8 from their 20 overs, Aaryman Roy again making their top score with 19. All the bowlers had good games executing their white ball skills to restrict the opposition: James Kelly 4-1-6-2, Ed Booth 4-0-19-0, Luke Smith 3-0-13-0, Sam Barraclough 4-1-14-2, Joe Smith 3-0-10-1 and Josh Chisholm, 2-0-15-1.
30th August versus Buckinghamshire at Rawdon CC. In this 50 over match Skipper Joe Smith lost the toss and Yorkshire bowled first. The first few overs proved difficult with bowlers struggling to find their rhythm. Once settled in to the game Bucks made 155 all out, with all the bowlers returning tidy figures, headed by James Kelly with 2-40 from 9, Robert Heyes 3-24 from 5.3 and Ed Booth with 2-21 from 8.
In reply Yorkshire started cautiously, Joe Smith and Josh Megson opening the batting. Megson was bowled for 3, this brought Jo Holderness to the crease and he and Joe Smith proceeded to take the team to the brink of victory. Smith was eventually out for a well made 82, Holderness 53 no and Chisholm 6 no saw the team home inn the 38th over.
31st August versus Buckinghamshire at Rawdon CC. Two T20 matches were planned, but late morning rain meant that one of the matches was discarded. Bucks won the toss and inserted Yorkshire who found runs hard to come by with wickets falling at regular intervals. Contributions from Josh Chisholm 13 & James Kelly 27, plus a late rear guard action from Joe Smith 25 no and Luke Smith 10 no gave the bowlers something to work with as Yorkshire finished on 109-8.
In reply Bucks started well, N Aslam scoring 25, J Drage 27, the openers putting their side in a strong position. Wickets started to come and the flow of runs was stemmed. Going in to the last five overs Bucks needed 15 runs. Good spells by Ed Booth 2-0-15-0, Sam Barraclough 4-0-25-0, Robert Heyes 4-0-19-0, Luke Smith 2-0-13-0 meant that spinners James Kelly 4-0-16-2 and Joe Smith 4-0-15-2 could put the pressure on. Going in to the last over Bucks needed 3 to tie with six wickets in hand. A great over by James Kelly left Bucks needing one to win from the last ball. James stopped the drive and ran the batter out at the bowlers end, leaving the match in a tie. Not wanting to end here both teams agreed on a super over! N Aslam scored two boundaries and with good running and one extra Bucks scored 18 runs first up. Going for the runs James Kelly was bowled second ball and although Tom Dowson hit two good shots the side couldn’t hit the boundaries needed to clinch a super over victory.
Following the game the players and parents were thanked by the coaches for their help and support through the season, with manager Johnathan Corcoan saying ''It has been a great season where all the players have developed individually and as a team and we have had some memorable moments along the way!!''
