Bill Ford Award, Outstanding Services to Cricket Coaching 2017.
Barrie (right) is certainly a legend in South Yorkshire when it comes to the development of juniors in schools, in the community and at club level. He has been coaching junior players for over 30 years, having started coaching at Sheffield United in the mid-1980s. Barrie offers fun, safe and enjoyable sessions for all. His commitment to getting young people into club cricket is second to none, and his ability through his enthusiasm and character is the reason why so many children have stayed and progressed through the game.
In 1992, along with three other coaches, Barrie, whilst at Sheffield United Cricket Club, was instrumental in setting up the Under 11s cricket competition for the Sheffield and District Junior League. Entering two teams into this competition helped the Under 11s’ story begin. Prior to this, there was only Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 17s junior cricket in the area.
Barry has also been involved in the elite end of the game, managing the Sheffield Boys Under 9s and Under 11s. He has also coached on the pathways to cricket excellence programme and the Ben Jessop elite nets.
The sheer number of cricketers to have emerged from Barrie’s sessions, along with the huge regard in which he is held, is testament to his years of dedication. Well done to Barrie on a very well-deserved award!
