Londesborough Park duo named Volunteers of the Year 2017.
When Malcolm Cartwright retired from playing for Londesborough Park Cricket Club, approximately 20 years ago, he became one of those rare people who continued to support the club – becoming the regular first team umpire. Malcolm has been a volunteer umpire ever since and makes himself available for the majority of the matches. This is considerable commitment for a man of 75 years old. If not required to umpire, Malcolm will even be there to score!
Phil High retired from playing for Londesborough Park Cricket Club over 15 years ago. But, like Malcolm, that was far from the end of his cricketing story. Phil still remains an intrinsic part of the club as a junior coach. Phil also became a volunteer umpire - a role he has now fulfilled for many years. Unfortunately, Phil has to work every other weekend, but when he is not working, he always makes himself available to umpire, rather than having that well-deserved weekend off! Phil’s list of roles at the club goes on; He also helps prepare the ground for match days and can be found down at the ground, along with Malcolm, every Tuesday and Friday afternoon.
Without the time given by volunteers, such as Malcolm and Phil, the club wouldn’t be nearly as successful as it is today. Cricket will always need characters like Malcolm and Phil – a real credit to the sport and worthy OSCA winners!
