2017 Award for Services to Black & Minority Ethnic Cricket.
There are people who quietly get on with their given job, going ahead in an efficient and unassuming way whilst gaining satisfaction and the respect from that all that come into contact with them. Mohammed Shafique is certainly one of those people; utterly reliable and a true gentleman. In the Bradford Mutual Sunday league, he is highly regarded for the methodical way he umpires but also as a man who gains total respect from all the league teams and players he comes into contact with - ensuring that the game is played in the manner that ensures fairness and sportsmanship.
Mohammed is known as Mr. Gymkhana - as a long serving member of the club since 1971. After starting his early playing career at Bowling Old Lane, he played many years at Gymkhana, before hanging up his boots to ‘put something back in to the game he loves’.
The 75 year old has now been officiating in the league for over 25 years and was presented with the Leslie B Briggs Trophy for services to the league last year, where he received a standing ovation from all present at the awards ceremony.
Mohammed Shafique’s contribution to BME cricket sets the example for the spirit of the game and the positive contribution he makes to club and league cricket in the Bradford area could not be more valuable.
