The YCB has a service available to assess unusual bowling actions and offers guidance and advice on correcting actions for players in Yorkshire. This is particularly relevant for young players or players whose actions have been reported in league or representative cricket within the county.
The main aim is to help players re-model actions that are seen as unusual, using computer technology and remedial programmes. The technology also enables some adjudication on the legality of actions to assist players who need to make adjustments.
The service is provided by Yorkshire Cricket Board and an appointed officer will attend a venue of choice (agreement between the player and/or the club and the officer). YCB will provide this service at a cost of £100.00 per visit, to be paid prior to the review.
The officer will carry out an assessment on the bowler’s action by way of video analysis, using the controls listed in the ECB Suspect Bowling Action Guide (download below).
Following the assessment, a report will be given to the player, club and Governing Body that reported the action. This will either suspend the bowler from competitive bowling until remedial work is carried out to correct the bowling action, or the player has a legal bowling action and can carry on playing in their competition.
If a player is proven to have an illegal bowling action, the player and club shall be responsible for the remedial work needed to correct this.
Following suitable remedial work, a YCB assessor will re-attend the agreed location and carry out a formal review by the same method listed above. A decision will be made and will be notified to the parties concerned.
Should the report clear the bowling action, the player can continue to bowl in their competition. Should the review not provide adequate evidence to clear the action, the player and club have the option to refer the player for more work with a suitable coach or can appeal the decision and have the decision reviewed by the ECB at their specialist centre.
All videos will be stored on YCB systems and kept in accordance with its data protection policy. Permission to film the player will be obtained prior to the review and will be stored as above.
To make a referral please contact centralops@yorkshirecb.com, providing details of who has requested the bowling action review and the details of the person under review, together with details of which club they play for.
