Match report.
A below par performance with both bat and ball saw Yorkshire U12 Development lose their first game in 2019. Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat. Progress was slow against the Derbyshire opening bowlers, who bowled a good line and length and made it difficult to score. Zaki Anjam was the first casualty with the score on 16. A second wicket fell at 25. Run scoring was still proving to be a challenge. William Cross (21) and Matthew Firbank, who went on to make 45 not out, were useful contributors, but the last 12 overs of the Yorkshire innings only amounted to 37 runs and the final score of 131 for 6 was at least 30 runs short of what should have been scored.
The Derbyshire reply was just as slow as the visitors' had been, but dropped catches gave the openers a helping hand. Derbyshire captain Oliver Flindall made the Yorkshire bowlers toil, as he made the most of his good fortune and finished on 55 not out. A missed stumping and some indifferent ground fielding also made a contribution to the winning score, with the only bowling success a smart caught and bowled by Will Bennison. The other wicket to fall was a run out before Derbyshire achieved the target with some 6.5 overs to spare.
It was not a good day as Yorkshire failed to repeat the cricket they had played previously and the lengthy break between games, bought about by poor weather and cancelled games, was evident. Despite the loss, the U12 Development can still be proud of a excellent 2019 season.
