ECB Umpires Training Course
This course is designed to give new umpires the key skills, knowledge, and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket. No prior experience of umpiring in cricket is required before attending the course.
Whether you plan to support Junior Softball cricket through to adult cricket, this course will cover the following topics:
- Understanding the role of the umpire
- Gain a basic understanding of umpiring the game
- Answering appeals and the common methods of dismissal
- How to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the game
- Judging whether or not it is safe to play
The course is split into classroom and practical learning, so we recommend learners to come dressed appropriately.
Learners will be asked to complete some e-learning prior to attending the course, which will take no more than 90 minutes to complete in total. Pre-learning can be completed via multiple visits or in one go.
Post course, learners will have the confidence and competence to go and umpire at appropriate levels within recreational cricket.

The YCB ACO will also be continuing with the face to face training of any umpire already part way through their ACO training. ECB Introductory Umpiring Course - Sheffield (South Yorkshire)

YCB ACO Umpire Refresher Courses
These refresher sessions are designed for experienced/qualified umpires who are already active in umpiring. These 'nets for umpires' are ideal to get warmed up for the upcoming season whilst also looking into the more technical aspects of the Laws (the minutiae or the nuances). There is no cost at the point of entry and tea/coffee is usually provided.
If you miss one of the weeks at a particular venue, you can attend the same week at another venue and get the same content.

Umpires Onward Learning Modules
These face to face Modules are suitable to any person who wishes to gain more of an insight into the Laws of cricket, or wishes to have enough knowledge to be able to do their turn at square leg competently or to be a club umpire.

This course is suitable for any person aspiring to become a panel umpire. It looks at some of the more common cricket laws in more depth, whilst expanding on some of the others not covered in module Click here to book.

This course is suitable for experienced umpires who wish to become Premier League umpires.
MCC On-line resource
MCC, the Guardian of Law, recently completed a comprehensive overhaul of the Laws. To coincide with the new code that came into effect on October 1st, 2022, they have produced an excellent on-line resource which will take you through each of the Laws, with explanations and examples
This resource is free and open to anyone, all you need to do is go to the Laws of Cricket section on the MCC website https://www.lords.org/mcc/ click on ELEARNING and then click on ‘FIND OUT MORE’ to register or access any of the information without registration by clicking on the appropriate modules.
