Super 1s in Leeds.
A brand-new Lord's Taverners SUPER 1S HUB has just launched in Leeds at St Chads Broomfield Cricket Club at 7-8pm on Wednesday evenings. It is the first time that SUPER 1S has come to Leeds and the HUB has already been running successfully in partnership with Sunshine and Smiles since May. Sunshine & Smiles is a registered charity that provides a support network in Leeds for children and young people who have Down syndrome.
Ailith Harley-Roberts, who is the service manager for the charity, said:
“Sunshine & Smiles is delighted to be working with St Chad's Cricket Club and the YCB to bring these fantastic SUPER 1S sessions to young people with Down syndrome across Leeds. The sessions are a great way to learn new skills, develop confidence and work as part of a team in a supportive and accessible environment. We're very much looking forward to a continuing partnership and to hopefully working towards playing some matches in the future”.
The hosts of the newly created SUPER 1S HUB ‘St Chads Broomfield CC’ are also an ECB Disability Champion Club with their intention to ensure the club can open their gates to anyone with a disability and deliver cricket opportunities within an inclusive environment. The Disability Cricket Champion Club Programme supports cricket clubs through guidance, resource, and equipment, enabling them to welcome individuals with additional needs and varying abilities to support them to play, follow, officiate, and volunteer. Creating a truly equitable club game and providing fantastic new opportunities for cricketers and for the Champion Clubs.
Paul Berry, the chairman at St Chads Broomfield CC in Leeds, said:
“Bringing disability cricket to our club has been fantastic, and it has been our pleasure to work with the YCB and a wonderful group of volunteers, parents and most importantly children from Sunshine & Smiles. We hope to build on this over the coming years”.
Rohan Randhawa, the Disability Development Manager for the YCB said:
“This is a perfect example of the new partnership work between Lord's Taverners and the ECB with the SUPER 1S and Club Champion initiative working hand in hand to ensure cricket remains an inclusive sport for everyone. I am very happy to see the successful start of the new HUB in Leeds and all our other SUPER 1S HUBS in operation after a tough year in 2020 for a lot of the participants on the programme. I am extremely proud that Disability cricket continues to grow across Yorkshire with so many new players, spectators and officials joining the game with the help of our partners at the Lords Taverners and ECB”.
