Shining the Light.
Match report by Emma Lawson, Yorkshire U18s.
Wednesday 21st of July began well, with a wonderful breakfast provided by Scarborough College, whose hospitality made for a pleasant stay. Scotland won the toss and elected to bowl. The first innings had triumphs and downfalls for both sides alike. A tremendous success was for Yorkshire’s opener Frances Lonsdale, who scored a stylish half century, demonstrating her talents and class. We had much needed contributions from Holly Cooper (with a quick 12), Asmi Shembekar and Georgi Houseman. The Yorkshire ladies finished the innings with a respectable ninety-nine for eight. Two bowlers who particularly came through were captain Beth Slater (1 for 14 off 3 overs) and Annie Brown (1 for 13 off 3 overs). The end results saw Scotland take the win by six wickets.
“As captain of the Yorkshire side, I know we didn’t play our best, but we put up a good fight and unfortunately the results didn’t go our way, but there was a good atmosphere among the team. We always encourage and support each other.” - Beth Slater, captain
Yorkshire lost the toss once again for the next match, and batted first. Millie Gray scored a quick 24 runs, Frances Lonsdale 14, and Emma Lawson 19. Annie Brown and Asmi Shembekar both helped Yorkshire finish on 103-6. In the second innings, Georgi Houseman and Abigail Thorley were two valuable assets for the Yorkshire side, with Georgi taking 1 for 15 off 3 overs and Abigail 1 for 18 off two. Although the result was another win for Scotland, by six wickets, it is fair to say both sides did well. The girls were forced to adapt and act under pressure and although they were not entirely successful, they took on board feedback from coach Mark Harrison and kept their heads held high.
