Match report.
Warwickshire U14 Development 163-8 (Hashim Wajid 3-18) beat Yorkshire U14 Development 160 all out (Matthew Hood 42) by 2 wickets.
Yorkshire made the long trip down on Sunday to face a good Warwickshire side at the pristine Edgbaston Community Sport Ground. Yorkshire captain Mason Young won the toss and elected to bat. The wicket had excellent pace and bounce with plenty in it for bat and ball. Tate Miller fell early, leaving remaining opener Matthew Hood at the crease. Hood (42) built promising partnerships with Rocco Cook (17), Charlie McMurran (11) and Harrison Knowles (16) in the middle order, but unfortunately wickets fell at regular intervals. Once Hood had been dismissed, a last wicket stand of 37 from Mason Young (24*) and Hashim Wajid (13) gave Yorkshire a chance at 160 all out.
The visitors would have to bowl field well in the second innings to have any chance of victory. Opening bowler Hashim Wajid began superbly with the ball, demolishing the Warwickshire top order with his 3-18, well supported by an excellent spell from Charlie Person. Warwickshire then built a useful partnership to take the game away from a determined Yorkshire side, who were fielding tenaciously. Ollie Walsh (3-30) entered the attack to claim three quick wickets and it was game on at 105-6! However, the hosts responded well, with an accomplished (and ultimately game winning) 46 run partnership to take the score to 151. Two quick wickets from Tom Miller (2-5) gave Yorkshire a glimmer of hope before Warwickshire squeezed home by two wickets.
An encouraging start to the season with some good performances in a committed Yorkshire unit. Next up, its Leicestershire at home this Wednesday at Doncaster Town CC.
