Yorkshire U15s travelled to Leamington Spa to take on Warwickshire U15s in a red ball two day game. Shorn of 10 of their regular squad, who were on an assessment day for North of England selection, nine of the development team stepped up and they didn’t disappoint.
Yorkshire’s captain James Blackburn won the toss and batted. They had to work hard early doors but Blackburn battled on to make 65 - an important innings in the context of the game - and, with Nico Nicola (21) and Jasper Male (32), laid a base that Joe Harrison (25), George Booth (28) and Mansoor Shinwari (20*) were able to build on, allowing Yorkshire to declare on 229-9.
Warwickshire started cautiously and were 80-2 off 30 overs at the end of day one. Yorkshire’s bowlers bowled much tighter on day two and Max Didgiunaitis (2-27) and Alfie Spencer (3-50) kept taking wickets to peg Warwickshire back before they declared on 201-6.
Yorkshire were sent out to bat positively and Sam Meadows (33), Blackburn (24), Jack Oakley (24), and Jasper Male (24*) enabled Yorkshire to declare on 159-7 after 29 overs; setting Warwickshire 188 to win in 36 overs.
The match turned Yorkshire’s way with a terrific spell of swing bowling by Lewis Hogg, who took 3-8 in six overs, and, with a wicket each for Joe Harrison and Alfie Spencer, Warwickshire were 62-5 at one stage. But, with the ball going soft and a benign pitch, they were able to bat for a draw. This was an impressive performance, particularly from the development lads, which shows the strength of cricket in Yorkshire at this age group.
