Match report vs California Cricket Academy.
Yorkshire Under-12’s development team tasted defeat for the first time in 2017, as they suffered a heavy loss to a California Cricket Academy containing seven Under-13 players.
On winning the toss, CCA elected to bat on a slow and low wicket. They made steady progress too, despite some accurate seam bowling by Matthew Simms and George Crowther.
Lachlan Doidge eventually claimed the first wicket courtesy of keeper Toby Williamson’s stumping on his county debut.
Isaac Coates then claimed the first of his three wickets to leave CCA on 44 for two when rain interrupted play. A lengthy delay forced an early tea to be taken, while the outfield was both wet and slow by the time play resumed.
CCA captain Rahul Jariwala showed a degree of maturity as he built his innings with singles and twos and the occasional boundary, finishing unbeaten on 93 not out.
Kanish Bhalla supported his skipper with 29 as the touring team posted 191. Coates finished with figures of three for 35 and stand-in skipper Doidge picked up one for 19 from his nine overs, including bowling three maidens.
A further rain break did not help Yorkshire’s cause and openers Simms and Edward Hutchings struggled to get any momentum.
After 20 overs the score had progressed to 55 for four, with only Harrison Knowles and Hutchings making it into double figures. Needing 136 off 25 overs, Yorkshire capitulated to 90 all out, a total that fails to reflect their batting abilities.
The older, physically stronger CCA held sway though, so Yorkshire will have to get back on track when we visit Durham.
